Edmund Clerihew Bentley
Tortured his readers mentally:
Biographical poems,
Four lines, never tomes.

The Meaning of Feline

Feline

There is a certain creature that
Has destroyed many a mat
Inside my house and likes to play with twine
Or anything that's made of string
She will claim it as her thing,
Most of what she "owns" is in fact mine!

She wonders why I get annoyed
When the mouse she has enjoyed
Is left a mess upon my kitchen floor,
Or when she will incessantly
Meow and scratch unpleasantly
Outside for me to come open the door...

But when from my repose I rise
To ope the door she wins the prize
For being a pain by changing then her mind
And coming back when I sit down
For another jarring round
Of "Let me in!" and will not be declined!

She will nag me earnestly
For food until I finally
Give in to her demands but when I do
She sniffs at it and walks away
To save it for another day
And has a look that says, "I so own you!"

And when I seek affection she
Will not have a bar of me
I pick her up only to get denied,
But when she wants a cuddle she
Expects to get one from me free
Despite the fact my hands are occupied!

She starts the evening on my bed
Only to end up on my head
Or greet me with her tail-end sometimes,
She treats me like I am her slave
I should have bought a dog to save
Me from belonging to a feline!

The Meaning of Corvine

Corvine

Outside doing outdoor things
I removed my wedding ring
To keep it safe but later to my woe
I found it was not where I left
It thus leaving me bereft
And lamenting the cruelty of crows.

It seemed this priceless ring of mine
Was now the thing of a corvine
Criminal, a raven or magpie!
One I could not easily
Pursue because someone like me
Can not apprehend a thief that flies!

The Meaning of the Boy's Name Colin

Colin

There is a man in heaven now
Whose name did mean "A dove"
And in his memory heads will bow
With thoughts of honor and of love.

The Meaning of Colubrine

Colubrine

A garter snake for goodness sake
Met me for a coffee break
Except in this case I was morning tea,

He shared me with his king snake friend
And so that's how I met my end
Writing in a colubrine tummy.

The Meaning of Char

Char

I knew a man who played guitar
So fast that it began to char
The fret board smoked and went from brown to black!

He played so fast, so fast and well
Despite the crispy cooking smell,
Such a shame his fingers won't grow back!

The Meaning of Car

Car

Depending upon where you are
There are three things that are named "car"
One of these of course you all should know;
A vehicle built for the road,
Wheeled so to pull its load,
Powered by an engine so it goes!

The second thing that has the same
Simple designated name
Is the car built for the railway,
Also called a carriage too
Or coach as well to name a few
To sit in as you go along that way...

Finally there is the room
Inside a lift or a balloon
Another thing that's also called a car...
Mind you all three, it's plain to see,
Will help get you from a to b
Whether you are heading nigh or far!

The Meaning of Captious

Captious

I know a captious sort of man
Who looks for fault in all he can,
All he seems to do is criticize!

Pedantic in his nit-picking
He'll quibble over everything
For naught he sees is perfect through his eyes.

The Meaning of Charadrine

Charadrine

A plover, snipe and woodcock spent
An evening in a pub I went
To where I saw them all three sipping wine,
Which was kind of strange to me
Something not ordinary
They weren't exactly acting charadrine!

They sat there speaking normally,
In English too apparently,
About the day they'd had and about how
A scientist of the mad kind
Had done a thing to all their minds
Thus leading them to where they were right now.

And so myself not that inclined
To have a drink with charadrine
Birds I left feeling a bit disturbed
Whoever heard of such a thing?
Birds not singing but speaking
Seem to me more than a bit absurd!

The Meaning of Cervine

Cervine

A moose an elk a stag a deer
Have a thing in common where
They share an adjective when it's defined

And so it's said of things that share
The qualities these creatures bear
That they are a thing that is cervine.

The Meaning of Ceratorhine

Ceratorhine

Really I had to look twice
When I met young Mrs Rice
Who had a face that was preposterous!

For there a big ceratorhine
Nose greeted these eyes of mine
One that should be on a rhinoceros!

The Meaning of Capreoline

Capreoline

Today I was surprised to find
The adjective capreoline
Was not about an actor with big bucks!

So sorry to Leonado
The one so named Dicapreo
The word instead refers to the roebucks!

The Meaning of Clathrine

Clathrine

When I do a written test
Even though I try my best
Most of my answers I will expunge
I'm afraid it's certainly
Said and also true of me
I have the brain of a primitive sponge

In fact I am not even sure
If one plus three is even four
Or how to find the square root out for nine
As said above the quality
Of my mental acuity
Is best described no less than being clathrine!

The Meaning of Ciconine

Ciconine

I went out for my dinner once
Where I felt like such a dunce
When I realized I had no fork

But it was no catastrophe
For I'm ciconine you see
And used me nose as though I were a stork.

The Meaning of Cameline

Cameline

Whilst I walked the dessert sands
In a dry waterless land
I saw I sight I did not understand,
For with me was an entourage
Which of course was a mirage
The likes of which not seen by any man!

For as I walked alone out doors
With me there upon all fours
Were a bunch peculiar mammals
Who up close appeared to me
Cameline though not really
But men who did pretend that they were camels!

The Meaning of Cuculine

Cuculine

I have a clock that tells the time
Through a certain cuculine
Creature on the hour right on cue,

It pops out suddenly on springs
And lets me know each time he sings
The only song he knows that goes "cuckoo"!

The Meaning of Chelonian

Chelonian

I have a certain quality
In fact an abnormality
In that my head and arms and legs retract,
That's right I can pull them inside
My torso in order to hide
Whenever I am frightened of attack!

This trait of mine you might think strange
Or perhaps a bit deranged
That there is a chelonian man?
Well I'm rather fond of it
And I don't mind it for a bit
And like to do what only turtles can!

So if you ever come upon
Me and all my limbs are gone
And my body seems without a head,
Please don't fret I am OK
It's just I saw you come my way
And thought it would be safer to play dead!

The Meaning of Cathartine

Cathartine

I was lying down outside one day
Soaking up the sunny rays
When I became prey to a Cathartine
Bird that pecked upon my head
As if I were a piece of bread
Luckily I woke up just in time!

To say to my new feathered fiend,
As my temper burned an steamed,
"Why on earth would you chew on my head?"
To which the vulture said to me
With a meek apology
"Sorry, but I was sure you were dead!"

The Meaning of Hircine and Caprine

Hircine and Caprine

Please don't be offended if
After I have had a whiff
Of you I say "My friend you smell hircine"
For I mean you only smell
Goat like which is just as well,
Imagine if instead you were caprine!

For that would be hard to amend
You would look like a goat and then
Surgery I'd have to recommend!
At least this way you have the power
To fix things by taking a shower
And put the way you smell to a good end!
