The Meaning and Pronunciation of Dour

Dour

Excuse me if I seem too sour,
Why does power rhyme with flour?
Why should dour rhyme with mower,
Sewer(1) doesn’t rhyme with sewer(2)?
Dour means a gloomy sort,
Humorless and not a sport.
Is he dour just because
English spelling has such flaws?

(1) Pipe with nasty stuff inside.
(2) Works with needle, thread and pride.

The Meaning of Desiccate

Desiccate

There was a fish who found out the
Hard way that a fish should be
Forever under water or else it
Would discover much too late
The harsh meaning of desiccate
When it dried up more than just a bit!

Then a fisherman came by
Discovering a fish now dry
Who was happy for the desiccation,
Because he liked sometimes to eat
Dried out and tasty fish meat
Preserved by the act of dehydration!

But alas the fisherman
Should have had a better plan
Than feeding on the mummified remains
Of the desiccated fish
For when he dined upon the dish
The fisherman was never quite the same...

For afterward it was stated
That he was desiccated
Drained of all normal emotional
Vitality for brutally
The fish in all reality
Was not meant to be eaten at all!

The Meaning of Dah

Dah

It was with quite some small remorse
When I found out that in Morse
Code the word for dash is also Dah,

I asked my wife, "Did you know that?"
She made me feel a stupid prat
When she simply said to me, "Well, duh!"

The Meaning of Dyspeptic

Dyspeptic

I ate more than my mouth could chew
Now I'm dyspeptic and might spew
Because my tummy's twisted up inside
With indigestion forcing me
Upon my back so hopefully
What's inside me won't soon be outside!

So best to stay out of my way
I'm not in a good mood today
I have become a grump and more than septic,

You'll find me quite unbearable
Crotchety and terrible
With my temper testy and dyspeptic!

The Meaning of Dacelonine and Halcyonine

Dacelonine / Halcyonine

There is a bird halcyonine,
That is also dacelonine,
The Kingfisher, a colourful wee bird,

And although named for catching fish
Not all of them enjoy that dish
But can hunt lots of things or so I've heard!

The Meaning of Didine

Didine

It seemed that I was out of luck
The day that I found I was stuck
Upon an island without much to eat,
I looked about to see what I
Could find to eat so not to die
And found a bird and killed it for its meat.

How was I supposed to know
It was the last of the Dodo
When I was so desperate to dine?
And so became the ugly fate
Of the species on my plate
It was the end of all creatures didine.

The City of Dacca

Dacca

In English once we said Dacca
When referring to Dhaka
Which is in Bangladesh the Capital
City and also I'm told
It is one that is really old
And also one not known to be small!

In fact it is extremely densely
Populated and intensely
Filled with thousands of rickshaws on cycles
Hundreds of thousands so I've learned
Giving it the name it's earned
The capital of earth's rickshaw bicycles!

Located by a river where
All the people living there
Know it by the old name Buriganga
Which is where, Ive also read,
A place that is more than said
To lie in the heart of the Bengal Delta!

And a lot of women there
Are the sort who like to wear
A saree or the salwar kameez
Unlike the men who much prefer
The kind of clothes now popular
Like the familiar t-shirt worn with jeans!

Something else Dhaka has got
Are mosques for there are quite a lot
Earning it quite a measure of fame
Around the world for being a town
Where such a building can be found
And bears City of Mosques as a nick name

What is the Meaning of Delphine?

Delphine

I don't like when I'm in the sea
That other things are there with me
Particularly anything with teeth!
In fact I would dare not go in
If I thought that when I swim
Something might decide to cause me grief...

But then I think of the Delphine
Creatures who are known at times
To be there to lend a helping fin,
The dolphins are the ones I mean
Unlike the sharks that I have seen
They're not as keen to feed when I jump in!

The Meaning of the Prefixes Dys and Para

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Dys- / Para- (Prefixes)

If you want a clever way
To say a thing's abnormal
Then insert PARA at the start
As in "Paranormal".

Otherwise you could indeed
Put DYS in PARA's place
And change the face of "functional"
By having DYS emplaced.

Daresay

daresay the word daresay
Is another way to say
That you agree, assume or just suppose,

So when you say that you daresay
It is therefore a thing to say
Instead of saying any one of those.

What is the Meaning of Defunct?

Defunct

I met a man who was defunct
Because the silly person jumped
From a branch and landed on his head,

He didn’t say a lot to me
But that was probably likely
To the fact that he was very dead.

The Meaning of Daemon

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Daemon

In Ancient Greek mythology
It happened periodically
That the gods oft called Olympians
Would find themselves a human mate
A girl with whom to procreate
The offspring of such union called a daemon,
A personage like Heracles
Also known as Hercules
Who was half god and also was half man,
What we called a demigod
The offspring of woman and god
Resulting in a rather super human

It's worthy here to also state
The Bible has another take
About a species called the Nephilim,
When angels were with girls in love
And came down to them from above
Creating half angelic human children...
Peculiar because it's said
When the Nephilim were dead
Their spirits could not go to hell or heaven
So the ghosts of them have stayed
To cause us grief and misbehave
Becoming what today we know as demons!

What is Dadaism?

Dadaism

After World War One there came
A type of art that was quite strange
And ruffled up the feathers of convention,
Mocking the traditional
Embracing the irrational
Seemed to be the point of this invention.

And the name of all this strange
Art that seemed rather deranged
Was taken from a most unusual word,
The French word for Hobby Horse
Dada” which seemed to enforce
The randomness of style so absurd!

What is Dactylology?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Dactylology

I tried to munch upon a bunch
Of sandwiches I had for lunch
When a stranger appeared suddenly
He did not speak but used his hands
Pointing so I’d understand
Making his intentions clear to me

I could tell quite quickly that
This chap thought I was much too fat
It wasn’t hard to work out his sign language
And so through dactylology
He told me that he would help me
To lose weight if I offered him a sandwich!

What is the Meaning of Vagary?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Vagary

Erratic and peculiar
Most certainly irregular
Is what is meant when vagary is said

As in the whimsy vagary
Of someone having a monkey
Bouncing tennis balls upon their head.
