An Example of Iambic Pentameter

Iambic Pentameter

I found one day a text that mesmerized
The words did dance in beats before my eyes
In little iambs skipping in rhythm
Musically though silently written.
Each line of it a dance upon the page
Cleverly devised as by a Mage
Who specialized in the magic of words
Making them to sing although unheard
I realized the structure of the verse
That hypnotized and had me so immersed
Was that kind of poetical meter
That they call iambic pentameter
In which the words in time do five beats make
And this example tries to emulate.

What is the Meaning of God Bye Ye?

God bye ye

Whilst reading old Will Shakespeare
There was a phrase I found in there
God bye ye,” was what the actor said..
I looked it up to find out what
It means and this is what I got,
“God be with you’s” meant when it is read.

“Goodbye” is what we say today
When a friend goes on their way
Which likely comes from this forgotten phrase,
But whether it is said or inked
Most of us would never think
It a blessing as back in those days!

What is the Meaning of Calumny?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Calumny

If I were to say of you
Something that was quite untrue
With the intent to hurt your reputation,

Not only would it be slander
To speak lies of your character
But calumny would fit the situation.

What is the Meaning of Assay?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Assay

Once the King commissioned me
To take his crown so I could see
If it was made of metal or of gold
He sent me on this royal mission
To satisfy his own suspicion
That it was not as pure as prior told.

So I took the crown away
To figure out how to assay
Or test it for the right ingredients
And putting it to scrutiny
I found out it was certainly
Manufactured by some miscreants!

For this crown that looked like gold
And to the king had then been sold
Was simply chocolate wrapped in gold tinfoil;
For when I put the crown upon
My head it didn't last for long
But melted running down my face like oil!

And now it is, to my dismay,
Up to me now to assay,
Up to me to carefully attempt,
To explain to an angry king
What happened to his favourite thing
And that his fortune had been poorly spent!

What is the Meaning of Sullied?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Sullied

When my kids eat vegemite
I make sure they're not wearing white
Or else their clothes are likely to get stained

Sullied with black finger prints
So much so I'll need to rinse
Them three times till only white remains!

What is the Meaning of Beteem?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Beteem

If one day you came to me
And tried to take away my tea
That’s something that I simply won’t beteem

It’s something that I won’t permit
My tea is mine, I won’t share it
I won’t allow you it is what I mean!

What is the Meaning of Antic?

Antic

Sometimes just to draw a crowd
I might act playfully and loud
Acting like a joker doing tricks
You could say I’m the type of bloke
Who likes to play practical jokes
With my wild and humorous antics

Like the night I dressed up in
A suit that looked quite alien
And hid behind some bushes in the park
And when young couples walked on by
I swear I made some of them cry
When I jumped out and said “Boo!” in the dark!

Or that other time last May
When in the middle of the day
Publicly I vanished in thin air
I’m sure I caused people to stop
And gasp a bit when I went POP
And just like that suddenly disappeared!

You see I’d built a small device
Sleek to look it, cheap in price
That landed me in 1529
Where I did decide to stay
Long enough to watch a play
Figuring I had plenty of time…

And in the play was a buffoon
An actor acting quite the loon
Getting up to lots of naughty tricks
It didn’t take me long to learn,
For by his actions I discerned,
That he was one of the first Antics!

Then with my little time machine
I thought that I would try to glean
From my travels more about this word
Discovering in Italy
That this word did probably
Come from “Antico” which seemed absurd

For “Antico” in Italian
Is a thing or a person
Who is old or ancient so to speak
And comes down from the Latin word
“Antiquus”, or so I’ve heard,
Which is the ancient way of saying “antique”.

None of which made sense to me
It seemed to me that history
Was itself quite fond of playing tricks
For how could “antiquus” become
A word to use when having fun
When antiques have nothing to do with antics?

So I went to England where
I met a fellow who lived there
Oscar of the Nineteenth Century
Who knew a little more than I
About our mother tongue so I
Asked him, “Please explain this mystery!”

But alas I came home more
Bewildered than I was before
Because quickly between us it was found
It also was an adjective
A word to use when trying to give
Something the qualities of being a clown!

But will I give up? No I’ll not!
I don’t think I will ever stop
Acting like an antic actor who
Makes life just that bit more fun
By making people shriek and run
When I jump out from a bush crying “Boo!”

What is the Meaning of Hic et Ubique?

Hic Et Ubique

Here’s a useful Latin phrase
That isn't heard often these days
Which I came across in old Shakespeare,

“Hic et ubique” which was said
By Hamlet of his father dead
And means in English “here and everywhere”!

What is the Meaning of Corse?

Corse

Another thing to call a corpse
Is of course a corse
That is of course if you lived in the days

When instead of “corpse” was said,
Corse” was what they called the dead
As in the days when Shakespeare wrote his plays.

What is the Meaning of Videlicet?

Videlicet

I like to find words that are dead
I like to keep them in my head
For even though they've died they do elicit
That I have an intellect,
And therefore earn me some respect,
Take for instance the word "videlicet"

I'd bet my belly button lint
That the bulk of you haven’t
Heard the word until you heard it then?
It simply means “that is to say”
Or “namely”, though not used to day,
It was used way back when Hamlet was penned.

What is the Meaning of Prenominate?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Prenominate

Here’s a word not often heard
An out of date transitive verb
Meaning to mention something beforehand.
That word being prenominate
Which as I said is out of date
And from English seems to have been canned.

You might be tempted then to ask
Why be burdened with the task
Of learning such a useless word is that?
I guess because one day you might
Read a play by the playwright
Who put it into Hamlet’s second act!

And so seeing as I have your ear
Allow me to insert in there
That as an adjective it should be said
That though we don’t now use this word
Another word these days is heard
And so we use “aforementioned” instead!

What is the Meaning of Wherefore?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Wherefore

If you see the word "wherefore"
And wonder what it is there for
The answer to that question might surprise

Wherefore here comes nowhere near
The word we know today as “where”
But is a word that’s said instead of “why”.

The Meaning of Beshrew

Beshrew

One day I saw a little snail
And oh the blighter made me wail
Making me declare on him a curse,
beshrewed him for the damages
He wrought upon my cabbages
Hoping he would end up in a hearse.

That’s right I wished upon the thug
A death that’s worthy of a slug
And said, “I hope you die under a shoe!”
So as you might by now have guessed
That speaking ill upon this pest
Exemplifies the meaning of beshrew!

The Meaning of Carp

Carp

Excuse me while I have a whinge
Over how I lost my fringe
When I went to see my hair dresser,
If you’ll let me I’ll go on and on
I’ll even lament it in song
So all the world can hear what I think of her!

“She butchered it!” I will complain
“My head will never be the same!”
Are the sorts of things you’ll hear me harp!
I will rumble out my groans
I will grumble out my moans
To demonstrate just what it means to carp!

What is the Meaning of Remonstrate?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Remonstrate/Expostulate

Allow us now to contemplate
The meaning of expostulate
Or in other words to remonstrate
To be in open opposition
Or to argue your position
Against a course of action you might hate!

For example if I state
That we should not shut the gate
You might well feel the need to set me straight
And remind my loudly that
Our little dog is not a cat
And might escape to meet a gruesome fate!

What is the Meaning of Quintessence?

About the Author            Home            What's it all about?

Quintessence

In medieval times
The philosophic minds
Taught about a thing they called quintessence
They were adamant
That this higher element
Permeated nature with its presence

But from those days of old
Its meaning has evolved
To mean the best example of a thing
Like something that incorporates
All of the essential traits
Of the thing that it is representing.
